The Fire that Fuels Us: What Pentecost Means for Baptists Today
The Fire that Fuels Us: What Pentecost Means for Baptists Today

For many of us in Baptist circles, our church calendars are marked by two massive milestones: Easter and Christmas. We rightly pour our energy into celebrating the empty tomb and the manger. But there is another major biblical milestone that often slips by with Pentecost is the foundational story of the global Church.

As we look at Acts 2, let’s rediscover why Pentecost matters deeply for Baptist believers today.

  • Pentecost is the Birth of the Local Church

As Baptists, we have a deep, foundational love for the local church. We believe in the autonomy of the local congregation and the importance of believers gathering together under the lordship of Christ.

Pentecost is quite literally the birthday of the Church.

Before Acts 2, the disciples were hiding behind locked doors, fearful and uncertain. But when the Holy Spirit descended, they were fused together into a living, breathing body. Pentecost reminds us that the church is not a building. It is a supernatural community created and sustained by the Spirit of God. Every time we gather for worship, business meetings, or fellowship, we are participating in a legacy that started on that historic day in Jerusalem.

  • A Bold Return to "Soul Competency" and the Priesthood of All Believers

Two of our most cherished Baptist distinctives are soul competency (the belief that every individual has direct access to God without needing a human mediator) and the priesthood of all believers.

Pentecost is the ultimate realization of these truths.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon specific people for specific times—prophets, priests, and kings. But at Pentecost, the prophet Joel’s prediction came to life: “I will pour out my Spirit on all people” (Joel 2:28).

The tongues of fire didn’t just rest on Peter or the elite leaders; they rested on everyone in the room. Men and women, young and old. Pentecost means the Holy Spirit indwells every true believer. You don't need a priest to speak to God for you; the Spirit of God lives inside you, equipping you to read Scripture, pray, and serve.

"For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body..."  1 Corinthians 12:13

  • The Ultimate Fuel for Evangelism and Missions

If there is one thing Baptists are known for, it’s our passion for the Great Commission. We are a people committed to cooperative missions and evangelism.

But Pentecost reminds us of a vital truth: We cannot do missions in our own strength.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus gave a strict command: Wait. Why? Because they needed power. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..." When the Spirit fell at Pentecost, the immediate result was evangelism. Peter stood up and preached a bold, Christ-centered, scripturally rich sermon. And what happened? The Holy Spirit convicted the hearts of the listeners, and about 3,000 people were baptized and added to the church that day. Pentecost shows us that our programs, our strategic plans, and our marketing mean nothing without the power of the Holy Spirit. He is the one who convicts, saves, and sends.

  • Living in the Power of Pentecost

This Pentecost Season, let’s not shy away from Acts 2. Let’s embrace it.

We don’t need to look for matching tongues of physical fire to experience Pentecost today. The same Holy Spirit who turned timid fishermen into bold evangelists is the Spirit who lives inside you and sits in your church pews every Sunday.

Let's use this season to pray for a fresh awakening in our churches. Let’s pray for the boldness to share the gospel with our neighbors, the passion to send missionaries to the ends of the earth, and a renewed gratitude for the Holy Spirit who seals us, guides us, and unites us.

Happy Pentecost, CBC!
